چکیده

The ability to simulate the surface energy balance and microclimate within a plant canopy is contingent upon accurate simulation of radiation exchange within the canopy. Accurate radiation simulations require some assumption of leaf angle distribution to compute transmissivity, reflection and scattering of radiation. The ellipsoidal leaf angle density function can very closely approximate real plant canopies but requires complex integrations for different combinations of leaf area index, incident radiation angle, and density function. This paper presents close approximations (R > 0.99) to compute the transmissivity and scattering functions for elliptical leaf angle distributions that can be more easily implemented into simulation models. # 2007 Elsevier B.V. A rotated ellipsoidal angle density function improves estimation of foliage inclination distributions in forest canopies

The ‘ellipsoidal distribution’, in which angles are assumed to be distributed parallel to the surface of an oblate or prolate ellipsoid, has been widely used to describe the leaf angle distribution (LAD) of plant canopies. This ellipsoidal function is constrained to show a probability density of zero at an inclination angle of zero; however, actual LADs commonly show a peak probability density ...

Simple parameterizations of the radiation budget of uniform broadleaved and coniferous canopies

Simulations of the different components of the spectral radiation budget of structurally simple leaf and shoot canopies with varying canopy leaf area index (LAI) were performed. The aims were (1) to test a proposed parameterization of the budget using two spectrally invariant canopy structural parameters ( p and pt) governing canopy absorption and transmittance, respectively, and (2) to incorpo...

14 Three-Dimensional Radiative Transfer in Vegetation Canopies

Interaction of photons with a host medium is described by a linear transport equation. This equation has a very simple physical interpretation; it is a mathematical statement of the energy conservation law. In spite of the different physics behind radiation transfer in clouds and vegetation, these media have certain macro and micro-scale features in common. First, both are characterized by stro...

Computation of daily PAR interception on simplified 3D crop representations to relate main vegetation structural characteristics to a generic clumping function – toward an application in rice crop growth model

Most agronomic models estimate canopy light interception using the Beer-Lambert law. This method only accounts for leaf area index (LAI) and leaf angle distribution (LAD) without considering the crop’s structural heterogeneity in space, or soil-leaf or leaf-leaf radiative scattering. These factors have been extensively studied during the past ten years e.g; (Luquet et al. 1998; Nouvellon et al....

Assessing the Impact of Canopy Structure Simplification in Common Multilayer Models on Irradiance Absorption Estimates of Measured and Virtually Created Fagus sylvatica (L.) Stands

Multilayer canopy representations are the most common structural stand representations due to their simplicity. Implementation of recent advances in technology has allowed scientists to simulate geometrically explicit forest canopies. The effect of simplified representations of tree architecture (i.e., multilayer representations) of four Fagus sylvatica (L.) stands, each with different LAI, on ...
